چکیده

Quite recently, some new mathematical approaches to black holes have appeared in the literature. They do not rely on the classical concept of event horizon — which is very global, but on a the local concept of hypersurfaces foliated by trapped surfaces. After a brief introduction to these new horizons, we focus on a viscous fluid analogy that can be developed to describe their dynamics, in a fashion similar to the membrane paradigm introduced for event horizons in the seventies, but with a significant change of sign of the bulk viscosity.

The Evolution of Distorted Rotating Black Holes I: Methods and Tests

We have developed a new numerical code to study the evolution of distorted, rotating black holes. We discuss the numerical methods and gauge conditions we developed to evolve such spacetimes. The code has been put through a series of tests, and we report on (a) results of comparisons with codes designed to evolve non-rotating holes, (b) evolution of Kerr spacetimes for which analytic properties...

Black Holes, Entropy, and Information

Black holes are a continuing source of mystery. Although their classical properties have been understood since the 1970’s, their quantum properties raise some of the deepest questions in theoretical physics. Some of these questions have recently been answered using string theory. I will review these fundamental questions, and the aspects of string theory needed to answer them. I will then expla...

7 A New Theorem for Black Holes ∗

A new theorem for black holes is established. The mass of a black hole depends on where the observer is. The horizon mass theorem states that for all black holes: neutral, charged or rotating, the horizon mass is always twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. The horizon mass theorem is crucial for understanding the occurrence of Hawking radiation. Without black hole radiation, the Sec...

Black Holes: New Horizons (11w5099)

This meeting was a joint activity of 3 theoretical physics institutes: Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Alberta (Canada), Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (Korea), and Yukawa Institute of Theoretical Physics (Kyoto, Japan). The meeting attracted leading experts in the field from 10 countries. As a result we had very fruitful and informative discussions of the exc...
